The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the national space agency of India. It was established in 1969 with the primary objective of developing space technology for peaceful purposes.
ISRO has made significant achievements in the field of space exploration. It has launched a number of satellites, including the Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system for telecommunications, television broadcasting, meteorology, and disaster warning; the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites for resource monitoring and management; and the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft, which orbited the Moon and made significant discoveries about its surface.
In 2014, ISRO launched the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), also known as Mangalyaan. MOM was the first Indian spacecraft to reach Mars, and it made India the fourth country to do so.
ISRO is also planning a number of ambitious missions in the coming years, including a human spaceflight mission called Gaganyaan, a mission to study the Sun called Aditya L1, and a mission to Venus called Shukrayaan 1.
Here are some of the major milestones of India’s space program:
1962: First sounding rocket launched from Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS)
1975: First satellite, Aryabhata, launched
1980: First remote sensing satellite, IRS-1A, launched
1994: First launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)
1999: First launch of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)
2008: First lunar orbiter, Chandrayaan-1, launched
2014: Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) launched
2022: Chandrayaan-3 mission launched
2023: Aditya L1 mission launched
India’s space program is a major driver of scientific and technological development in the country. It has also helped to improve India’s disaster management capabilities and to provide valuable information about the Earth’s resources. ISRO is a leading space agency in the world, and its achievements are an inspiration to many.
